What is interaction?
I THINK INTERACTION IS:
…when your actions apply to the respons
…when you do something and get a certain response as a result of what you did
…when you give information and get information in return
…two-way communication through a medium
3 INTERACTIVE THINGS:
A piano
A piano is a mechanical instrument which gives the user music in return of physical pressure. The input method is quite easy, just pushing one of the keys. But because of the number of keys (normally between 70 and 80) and because you get a different result regarding the amount of power the keys are pressed down with, it takes knowledge and a lot of training and coordination to fully master the instrument.
I like the idea that it is possible to play the piano on different levels; everyone can easy interact with a piano and create sound, but at the same time it is quite hard to become a good pianist. I also find it interesting how the piano and the pianist get the best out of each other, and together create something magic and bigger then themselves – namely the music.
Digital camera
A digital camera is a product which is able to capture a view and save it digitally as a 2-dimensional photo.
The interaction takes place in different situations; while preparing the camera, taking the pictures, viewing the pictures and transferring them to a computer.
You operate the camera by navigating the menus, adjusting the different parts and pressing the buttons. Physically it is quite easy to do these things, but you have to know what to do. In the beginning it is quite difficult to understand. It is possible to make the camera adjust almost everything automatically, or manual for those with more knowledge and experience with the same or similar cameras.
The feedback while using the camera comes mainly from the screen or by looking into the camera. It also makes some sounds to inform the user when something happens.
I like this camera better than other cameras I have tried. This is because it is possible to use it in a very manual and physical way, but it still has the advantages of being digital, where you get the result right away. I like the zoom because it is so big and manual, and therefore gives you physical feedback.
Television
TV as a medium is hardly interactive, but the box is.
The TV is a box showing images in movement, where the content depends on the available sources. The user normally interacts with the TV through a remote control, where he is able to change between the available channels and watch a limited number of pages at text-TV.
The user is not able to communicate in other ways than to choose between the limited choices. This lack of interaction makes a lot of people inactive and paralyzed by the medium. But in the same way TV can be a relief from everyday pressure, just because it is so easy to be entertained by, and because it doesn’t demand anything back from you.
